I'm a big believer in keeping things as simple as possible and as complicated as necessary.     I open up my Digital Loggers page and turn on the mount, PowerBox and mini-PC.    The remote PC is set to boot up on receiving power.    No coding necessary.   I wait 3-4 minutes after turning it on and then I access the remote PC from my desktop at home.  It's important to make sure there's enough time for the computer to be fully booted before accessing it remotely.

What is necessary though was that I had to add some instructions to the Web Power Switch to make sure that it could communicate with Tailscale, which is the software my remote site uses to access their servers, or something like that.   That only needs to be done once.

When turning off the remote PC it's critical that you do it from your remote PC Windows software, just as you would power it down if it were at home.  In other words, do not just shut off the Web Power Switch–you do that AFTER the remote PC has been shut down properly, as Windows requires.

Roger Webster:
Any tips on getting Tailscale installed on the WPS? I followed the faq on the WPS site, but it installs an ancient version, and all my attempts to update it fail in tedious ways.

That is, Tailscale is installed on my WPS, but it's complaining that the version is very old and wants me to update with a newer Tailscale. Were you able to update your version, or are you living with the one it complains about?

Thanks!

It's not difficult but you're right, I found that the instructions on the WPS site are a bit lacking in detail.

Unfortunately, I didn't write down what I did to get Tailscale installed correctly so I can't remember exactly the steps.  I remember it involves opening up the DOS window in Windows (not called that anymore, but you know the window that administrators can do stuff like DCIM, system file checker, etc.)  and add some code.

I'd ask the tech at your remote site if they know how to do it or ask others who have scopes at your dark site how they did it.

I got it working: the WPS folks do their own custom build of Tailscale that strips out a lot of stuff so it will fit on the WPS . You can update to the latest Tailscale-supplied build whenever you update your WPS firmware (they appear to be "paired"). Updating the WPS firmware allowed me to update to 1.56… of Tailscale, which is recent enough that it works. I still get a nag in the TS status page that I should update, but the WPS are clear that "for now" I have the latest TS.
