I got what I thought were some reasonable subs last night but when I tried to process them in both PI and APP, both apps indicated that no stars were visible. APP indicated one (1). Perhaps I've messed up a setting but I doubt it as the result was the same in both apps. I've attached a Luminance sub. |

Perhaps PI and APP were mistakenly directed to your darks or your flats instead of your lights?

I've attached a Luminance sub. This is very peculiar. I know you don't use Siril, but the only time I've encountered a similar issue is when using the Beta versions of Siril (most recently the two beta releases from Siril won't properly stack my images and I had to roll back to the last stable release). I'm not sure about either PI or APP, but did they recently release updated/beta versions of the software?

I took your image into PI and it ran through ImageSolver perfectly. I took the assumption your scope and camera were the same as in your other photos and filled out the image parameters. I'd double check settings? I'm sorry I don't know any other way to check this image for any issues that might cause you problems. I do know that sometimes I have to reset the plate solver script if it pulls up incorrect information. I've also had to play with detection scales and noise reduction on an image or two before. I didn't catch an issue with your sub though. I've never used APP so I cannot speak to that.

Dean Jacobsen: Perhaps PI and APP were mistakenly directed to your darks or your flats instead of your lights? I've certainly done this before!

What focal length and pixel sizes are recorded in your FITS headers? In the past, I had an issue with star alignment and image solver in Pixinsight with subs which had the wrong focal length recorded (I forgot to change the focal length before that session, so my ASI Air had recorded the wrong focal length into my FITS headers). Subs with the correct information worked just fine!

Thanks for the suggestions. Tonight’s clear and I’ll reshoot the same target, process and see if the results are different.

I found the answer to my problem.
When I did up a dark library recently I missed doing 180 seconds. Upon discovering this I did a set of dark exposures at 180 seconds. These were the darks that I was using for processing. Apparently there is something different about them.
When I reprocessed this time I used 240 second darks. I didn’t know that as long as the darks are longer than the lights, you can use them.
Everything went well this time around and I’m pleased with the results.
