Suggestion for improvement.
If astrobin adds new notification options, the default setting should be off. It isn’t a big deal but i (and probably most others) find it rather obnoxious to get multiple emails for things I don’t care about.

Yeah in principle I agree, the reason that notifications default to true (new users and new notifications) is discoverability.

You can always turn them off in your settings and you wouldn’t know they exist if you didn’t get them.

I guess the ideal solution for new users would be to onboard then to let them choose what notifications to receive after signing up.

However there are a lot and it would be a huge wall of text that’s not ideal for new users (unless it’s simplified to a slide bar from “few notifications” to “all notifications” and then astrobin decides what it means.

For new notifications discoverability might be a little on-site prompt to inform you.

The “however” there is that many people will close it without reading.

It’s not an easy UX problem to solve but I’m open to suggestions :-)

How about a notification after signing up to prompt them to update their notification settings. I'm only partially joking. 😅

I know you're joking but it's the same struggle as always:

1. I need to convey some information, e.g. "this notification exists"
2. Some users are quick learners, don't need to be spoon-feed, while others need to be shoved things in their face a bit more (bluntly said!)
3. Whatever I do, I will always underfeed information to some, overfeed to others, feed exactly as much as needed to others

So the question becomes:

- Do I tend to underfeed in order to not annoy those that don't need a lot feeding, but then a lot of people will be underfed?
- Do I overfeed in order to reach all kinds of users, annoying some slightly?

This is the most generalized way I can think of explaining the problem.

I completely get where you're coming from as I deal with these questions almost daily myself – and honestly, I think it works fine as-is. But if I were building a quick, low-effort way to introduce settings, I’d just use the notifications instead of throwing a wall of settings in their face after signing up.

I get the problem but why is it necessary to spam mail me? Wouldn’t it be enough to get notifications on astrobin itself?

Again I'm just giving my unsolicited opinion as another member, but it's not uncommon to receive email notifications when a website you're a member of sends you a notification.  This is expected functionality and I wouldn't at all call it spam.  There's even a link in the emails that go out to edit your notification settings.  Since you're not a new member, I'm curious to know what triggered this post now and not 4 years ago.

I’m sure what triggered it is the new notifications for IOTD/TP awards from people you follow.

It might also be that they didn’t find the settings to turn them off because I initially forgot to add them so for about a day you couldn’t turn them off.

They’re there now.

Exactly that. As said not a big thing for me personally and i can turn it off, no problem.

it is just that i don’t have the feeling that getting (in my case 6 or 7) multiple emails, on a single day, about a thing that i also get notified on astrobin itself is unnecessary.

Imagine someone who is following more members than i do (i am following around 100 people) and a situation where you don’t look at your mails for a week or two.

Random thoughts here:

- Email is way more intrusive so if notifications default to on in app but off in email people would still know they exist
- I might not mind getting some sort of daily notification summary by email rather than many emails that clog things up
- Some things are lower odds a person would want email notification on such as posts about software or hardware I also have used. Maybe some stuff defaults to on by email and others don’t?

Yeah I agree on all counts, and will probably go that route when adding new notifications in the future.

This is a bias of mine tho, because for instance on AstroBin I have all on-site notifications off, and only emails.

The reason is that I find it easier to manage my email inbox, since I'm already diligent about deleting/archiving and keep it at a very low count of only things that are actionable.

For on-site notifications I would simply let it spiral out of control and have thousands of unread notifications.

If your inbox looks like that, I don't think a few emails from AstroBin are the problem :-D

Rumor has, Tim Cook personally called him to delete some emails because they were running out of disk space at Apple.

He had to call him because sending another email would require that they open another data center.

The data center would cost 2 billions, so they offered Kevin 1 billion to delete all those emails, but our hero refused!

This. My first thought when I get an email notification, from ANY site, is: "I didn't ask for this, why are you sending this to me?". Very few of my notifications are via email, and, as they relate to other users, only when they send me a private message. A notification in app only with an option to disable both in app and enable email would be the way to go.

Now you need to see @Brian Puhl's AB notifications.  You might need to get some space back from him!

Hey, I still delete them every couple weeks!      I found out they fall off after a few weeks anyways.   I couldn't get past 16k.

In gmail I just made a label with an auto filter that applies to [email protected], and then you can set the label so you dont see it in your main inbox only if you select the label.

I just looked in my Settings and there were 40 (!!!!) items set to a default of Email that I went back and changed. Didn't know they existed and didn't really care about them.

I would ask that future "features" are not set to Email by default.
