I am considering replacing my Ioptron CEM40 with a strain wave mount to avoid the 20 pounds of counterweights necessary to balance my 8” MEADE LX200 ACF OTA, reducer, EFW, OAG and ASI2600MC, which weighs about 24 pounds. I have narrowed it to the Ioptron HAE43C and the ZWO AM5N, and would appreciate any recommendations based on your experience. The HAE43C is rated at a 44 pound payload compared to the 33 pound payload of the ZWO AM5N, and cost about $500 more new. Would the 24 pound payload be pushing it for the AM5N?  Both of these are relatively new and I am hoping to hear from those who have used them. Thanks. Jim

Hi Jim,
I have the HAE43c and I can say with total confidence, it will have no problem with your scope and your focal length with no counterweights. Heck, I think the regular AM5 would handle that scope easily without counterweights.
I used my HAE43c with the mighty Askar 151PHQ which is 28lbs with rings and dovetail. Well over 30lbs with camera and stuff, I didnt use a counterweight and the mount worked great.
My guiding was amazing with 2600mcduo or the 533mcp w the OAG loaded with the asi220mini guide camera. My guiding was always solid at around .5-.8. Ive since sold the scope. We are moving and once we are settled, I plan on trying my Quattro 250P with the HAE43 and Mortar Tri-Pier. Before I load the mount with over 40lbs of stuff, I will buy the counterweight. Fingers crossed.
I hope that helped.

Thanks, Joe. I just got the HAE43c, and hope to set it up after the clouds leave in a few days. The extra payload compared to the AM5N and the compatibility with my CEM40 tripod sold me. Nice to hear it has worked well for you with the heavier setup.

Hi Jim,
I have the HAE29C the little brother with a TOA 130NS smile  on a steel lite rock though (carbon wont' make it) as far as I know the ZWO is not braked.
regards,
Antonio

Yes, I see several concerns about using the carbon fiber tripod because of the “tipping over” possibility. I took the HAE43 out last night on the LiteRoc tripod and it felt secure.  I was surprised that the Circuit Board on the dovetail saddle has no cover.  Seems like a possible issue with some weather conditions.
