I have a problem with my camera's cooling system, every time I try to plug in the cable the fan starts for two seconds and then turns off and then starts again etc.. is it a power problem, maybe I'm using the wrong adapter?

It sounds like a loose adapter plug or a bad cable. You might want to find a way to stabilize the power plug so it doesn't move around. These small connectors and USB as well really were never designed to be used the way we do with our astro rigs so until that changes you have to find solutions. You can do a lot with velcro, rubber bands, twist ties and hot glue to make these connections a lot more reliable.

The fan should run all the time when the 12v barrel connector is plugged in with power applied. It doesn't matter if the TEC cooler is turned on or not

Hi, I had the same problem with the 163M and bought another Power Supply which has solved this problem. But a few months later I could no longer control the temperature so the sensor was cooled at maximum power … Then one night , I dropped my camera on the ground. Surprise, the shock restored temperature control !! ?? With a terrible AMP GLOW this camera is the worst of the ZWO cameras that I acquired. I mainly use it for the spectro which does not pose a major problem but I always expect that it dies one night or the other. Bye Luc |

Just a thought, but you could have a short to ground in your adapter, or wired backwards and your power supply is intelligent enough to see this, cuts off power. I had a power cable go bad and these were the exact symptoms. I originally thought it was the power supply.

I tried another power supply with more amps and it seems to work but I won't use it since it's quite dated and I don't want problems in the future

I'm not saying it's your power supply, I'm saying it's your adapter, or power plug. Something in the system is shorted. Anyways, just a shot

Merco: Is it a different power supply with its own cables? If so, you should be fine. 12 Volts DC is 12 volts DC, really doesn't matter that the power supply is old. As long as at has enough amperage, you should be fine. |
