TiffsAndAstro:
Jordi: Hi!
I just processed this image of The Cocoon Nebula, and I’d like to hear your opinion. What do you think could be improved, in your view? What would you change?

Looks utterly amazing. As I think you know Hi TiffsAndAstro! Thank you so much for your words! Yes, I think that my image is good, but not great or amazing. I want my image to stand out from the rest. There are many things that can be improved, from the framing to the contrast, including the stars. Since I don’t have anyone in my circle who can properly guide me on this topic, that’s why I’m asking here. I know the image can be improved in many aspects, if not all of them. Thanks! Jordi

Hi everyone! I’ve just uploaded a new version of my image. Following the suggestions I liked the most, I’ve changed the geometry of the image. I’ve also lowered the intensity of the Ha signal and increased the level of the nebula. Additionally, I’ve desaturated the stars and slightly eroded their halos, especially the red ones. I've uploaded two versions, one a bit more saturated than the other. What do you think? More saturated: https://www.astrobin.com/4vjlah/C/Less saturated: https://www.astrobin.com/4vjlah/B/Thanks a lot for your time and effort. This is important to me, because I want to enhance my processing skills. CS Jordi

Looks great, I really like the less saturated version.

Tony Gondola: Looks great, I really like the less saturated version. Thank you very much, Tony! Without the community's feedback, I wouldn't have noticed the possible improvements. If you see anything else that could be improved, let me know, alright? Thanks a lot, Jordi

Jordi: Finally, I've decided to make public a mix between both versions Hi Jordi, sorry for being too late Looks fine that you've managed to bring out the bluish tint of the Cocoon "collar" - the thing many get lost. But at the same time the area around ic5146 doesn't look as a light source for the scene as it should be to my mind. The dark ring between the center and the "collar" make this even more vivid. Second: there is almost no background in the image, reducing overall contrast. I'd advise subtracting extremely low-pass red to fix this. And the third: the dust tail is illuminated by ambient galactic glow. Thus it should look yellowish. Your version has too much red and magenta. Clear skies, Konstantin

Konstantin Firsov: Hi Jordi, sorry for being too late *Hello Konstantin! Thanks for your kind and useful apreciations. I also see that the "collar" looks a bit dull, but I'm not sure how to make it look more illuminated without introducing too much noise. However, I have tried increasing the contrast between the darker and lighter parts of the nebula. Still, it seems like I haven't quite found that point that makes this zone convey the feeling of light I would like. I'll work on it a bit more to see if I can produce a new revision that captures this. As for the dust tone, I'll see if I can add a more yellowish touch, although I’ll make sure the overall palette remains balanced. Regarding the background, I don't understand what you mean when you refer to 'substracting extremely low-pass red.' Could you please guide me a bit more on this? Thank you very much for your help, CS Jordi

Jordi: extremely low-pass red.' It depends on the software you are using. Generally it is a part of frequency separation technique. In Photoshop you could make a layer copy and apply enough gaussian blur to make any signs of object disappear. Switch blending mode to "subtract" and adjust transparency. Apply to red channel only. This will correct some gradients and suppress large-scale detail. Better trying this in 32-bit mode before sufficient color stretching. Cheers, Konstantin
