Since my 2600MC Pro is new to me, I have been researching filters - watching a lot of Cuiv and reading all the technical data - but I'm curious which filters the average users of this camera prefers. I have the Optolong L-Ultimate and L-Quad Extreme, but have only, up to this point, used the L-Ultimate for anything other than tests. What are you favorite filters? What do you look for, or look out for in filters?

Michael McNerney: Hello Michael, I’m no expert but I’ve used my UV/IR Cut filter, L-Pro & my NBZ filters with my 2600mc pro. I’ve been very happy with the results although if there was a change that I’d make I’d probably replace the NBZ with an Antila ALP-T. While I’m happy with the results of the NBZ I think the ALP-T would give a better contrast and band separation. Dale |

Dale Penkala:Michael McNerney: Thank you, Dale. Have you tested the Antlia? I considered the ALP-T, but went with Optolong L-Ultimate - mostly because I found a great deal. And to get a hot buy for 3nm is like winning the lottery. Since my original post, I have now used the L-Quad Extreme on the Helix Nebula - a bit low in the sky, so I was curious about the light pollution levels low on the horizon. At 180 sec subs, there was a pretty definite gradient. Also, interesting that there is a "halo" around the Nebula, which seems too perfect to be part of the Nebula. Since I'm using a Ritchey-Chretien, there is no glass in the image train, so I'm guessing it's like a star halo from the filter, but around the entire nebula. I have played around to try to remove it in post, but it's very stubborn. Curious if you've ever experienced a halo from the filter around an entire nebula. |

Michael McNerney:Dale Penkala:Michael McNerney: Hello Michael, Funny you should ask about a comparison! Yes I did and you can see my results as well as images taken with it. Here is the comparison: https://www.astrobin.com/uz2syz/E/?nc=&nce= The difference is very slight in the comparison but when you truly process the data it really makes a difference at the 5nm verses the 10nm. As far as the glow around the nebula goes, no I’ve never run into that particular issue. I know that there are threads about halo’s around stars with some of the Optolong filters in particular the L-Pro (which I have 2 of them 1 for each of my rigs) and I haven’t really found it to produce that kind of halo’s I’ve seen. Maybe a slight one but its never been anything I’ve not been able to fix/adjust though processing. Dale |
