Having a backyard is luxury that unfortunately I don't have.

Being able to do the hobby that we love in the comfort of a home must be something really amazing. For all of us that don't have a backyard there is no other choice than packaging all the equipment in the car and drive, sometimes for hours, to a dark location, and yes, perform polar alignment every time.

To inspire my fellow astrophotographers that are in the same situation I have created a video and publish on my channel on Youtube: https://youtu.be/ukczQEeGEfs

thumbnail.jpgEvery time I do astrophotography I travel 1 hour to a remote location. And I really do not mind. Every time I go, I have a new adventure. I can enjoy the solitude, stare the night sky by my own and contemplate the beautiful views of the Pyrennes mountains in Spain. This time, my target was to take a picture of the famous Cygnus loop with my Redcat 51 scope. Moreover, as the winter constellation is starting to be visible I plan to take a landscape astrophoto of the Andromeda galaxy and the Heart and Soul Nebula near the horizon.

A backyard or some way to test gear out at home is definitely a luxury. I am tempted to say it’s almost a requirement depending on the complexity of the setup and what you are going for. I’m currently working on a completely mobile setup based around an f/1.4 telephoto lens, and having a backyard has been indispensable to getting that off the ground. So much gear has to be tested and so much tedious work has to be done to tweak things like spacing that I could never do it on the road. And even notwithstanding this ability to test run the setup, having the ability to image from home also allows acquisition of data on weeknights and nights where you can’t get to a dark site.

That being said, nothing beats the adventure and satisfaction of getting an image from a dark site.

I do not have back yard either. I travel 2-3 hours away to Bortle 3-4 on the days I feel like driving which is most of the days smile otherwise, I try some narrow dual band from near by parking lot ….when I travel 2-3 hrs away,  at least I get away from Chaos and get to spend time under stars and Mosquitoes smile…. Keep it up … Thanks Dhiraj

My small backyard is completely illuminated by a street light therefore I prefer my balcony or attic windows so that I‘m above the lamp. Thanks to Three Point Polar Alignment it‘s possible to shot from nearly everwhere without direct view of Polaris.

I don’t have a usable yard either.  Tall house, trees and small patio. I have a small patch of sky I can do basic testing with no view of Polaris.
I travel about 2-3 hours as well to a nice dark site. I spend the night, sometimes 2 nights or more.  I really enjoy getting out of the city. I can hear coyotes and the wind.  With great views of the stars.
There are times I wish I had a yard with more sky but it’s not possible now.  It is difficult sometimes to juggle weather, the moon and work. But when it comes together it’s awesome!

Just watched your video. Very nice work!

And you are blessed for this beautiful location and such great low polluted skies!

A backyard is definitely a luxury in most urban locations. I don't take it for granted and appreciate the fact that I can do so much from my backyard that I have not travelled once yet to do AP. I definitely hope to start traveling some day to darker sites.

Sounds good Ashraf. Travelling to a dark site breaks the routine and it is always an adventure!
