I’m a 60+ year old beginner from Järvenpää, Finland. Sometime in late 2023, I was walking with my 2 year old grandson late at night. He started asking me about the moon and stars, and I soon realized, to my chagrin, that I couldn't name a single star, let alone a planet. Later I downloaded Stellarium on my phone, after which we diligently followed Jupiter's passage across the sky. Then I bought a small Maksutov Cassegrain telescope, with which we observed Jupiter in more detail.

At the beginning of 2024, I started buying equipment for astrophotography, which turned out to be a long and laborious process. It wasn't until August that I was able to shoot the first few hours of footage with my IMX585 Touptek color camera. I am a linguist by training and have no experience in using complex observational equipment, therefore learning astrophotography is a big challenge for me. But right now it's the funniest thing I know!

Welcome AoN! I'm new myself to the bin but not to imaging the night sky. I started that with Halley's comet! Enjoy the night skies while you can. You're further north than I am in Canada so from May to July, you are going to have some VERY short nights!

Hello back to you from USA. I’ve also always introduced myself as a beginner. But I’m now in my 5th year in the hobby. Time goes by quickly, you’ll learn more than you think, and  you’ll have a blast. Along the way, the Astrobin community can lend a hand.

And in winter, a clear sky means -10–20 Cº degrees of frost!

That's true, but I still don't know how to protect the telescope from frost and how it should be handled after the shooting session.

Warm greetings from Lower Saxony, Germany. I also started astrophotography 4 years ago as a complete newbie. You will see that over time you will make enormous progress in terms of recording and editing. Winter in Finland is of course ideal for taking a lot of long-term photographs because of its long nights, but this is less possible in summer.I wish you lots of great suggestions on Astrobin and lots of beautiful pictures. Many greetings, Johannes

Welcome! The work you've done so far is very nice!

Dew straps for keeping frost off the optics while shooting. When I bring a scope in with frost on it, I leave the dust covers off until it warms up.
