Hello,
I was thinking it would be nice to include somewhere in advanced search a  'search with location' feature. I see currently we only have search by country. maybe search by state/town would be great addition as well. This forum is already great in uniting astronomy lovers around the globe, but with this maybe more people can get to know each other and collaborate more on projects if they stay within a reasonable distance. Probably will encourage more smaller group dark night Imaging/Visual sessions , all powered by astrobin. What do you all think?

I'm curious about this one. I've always been very cautious about features like this for privacy reasons, but of course this could be controlled by privacy settings and be disable by default.

I thought about Privacy being a concern too, but like you said if it can be controlled and only the State or town can be displayed or searched that would be awesome.   thanks @Salvatore Iovene

I think this is a great idea. Privacy is an issue, but as a ‘Backyard’ imager, I already reveal my location  (as do many others) each time I post an image.

Of course I don't know how difficult these things are, but you could just make it an opt in feature. A little tickbox in your preferences for something like "Show up in location based searches"

As Brian pointed it out, when we do captures from our backyard, quite often, we have already revealed our position to a place within a relatively small area. So, the main issue could it be for those using mostly remote systems, either users of readily available data sets or equipment that were sent to remote observatories. Now could this initiative to trigger the start-up of small communities in the "neighbourhood"? no idea, I found quite often that it is easier to collaborate with people that is far away from me rather than with those in the nearby.

Claudiio.... Hopefully that will act as a deterrent for all those Northern "carpetbaggerers" stealing our beautiful Southern targets by remote observing.

carpetbaggerers

Jajajaja, or hahaha, Brian, you make my day, we are running close to an election here and I didn't know how to say "this kind of distortion" in english, and you have just provided the precise word "carpetbaggerers", so now I can explaind some "situations" to my other friends.
