I have my own, self-installed set of equipment at commercial hosting facility. Usually, when uploading an image I choose "Amateur hosting facility", then select particular enterpise from the list below. But now I wonder if I`m doing this right, cause many choose "Own remote observatory" option, then some commercial location like Deep Sky Chile, Starfront or such. Does selecting "Amateur hosting" imply rented equipment, time-share, or something like that?

The key is in the section header. Self-acquired vs Downloaded.

In your case, it would be "Own remote observatory".

If you were renting time or download ready-made data sets, you'd choose "Downloaded -> Amateur hosting facility".

I was sort of wondering something similar. I have a backyard observatory and I'm not sure if there's a very specific choice for that. I've been using "Own Remote Observatory" but it doesn't feel accurate to me in my case. Maybe I'm over thinking it though! 🤔😁

It's up to you, to be honest. Do you have an actual dome with a permanent observatory that, while in your backyard, you operate remotely from home? That might be an "Own remote observatory". It kinda depends where you draw the line.

Yes, it's a dome with a permanent setup inside. I may be a special case since I manually open the shutter and do some things manually inside the observatory but it's mostly automated after that. I can definitely control a majority of it remotely if needed. Just not the shutter.

I suppose Own Remote Observatory works well enough though! Again, probably over thinking it. 😊

We're surely both overthinking it, LOL, but I think that it's just impossible to pigeonhole everyone. Personally, if I were you, I'd try to understand how you "identify". You might have a dome that's remotely operated, but if you live in a light polluted area, the fact that you are in your backyard trumps the other factors and makes you identify as a backyard astrophotographer.

I always understood a remote setup as one that you cannot easily get to in order to adjust something.

That's an excellent definition!

I have always used “Backyard”, but to be completely transparent, my scope is in the front yard…

Yeah I agree with that definition which is what makes it a conflicted selection on my part.

On the other hand, I feel like my dome is noteworthy since it was probably the most complicated upgrade I've done since starting astrophotography and has changed how I image which is why I'm drawn to selecting anything mentioning an observatory.

Front yard here and no dome and no permanent pier, so i always confuse about it, and since long time ago i didn't upload anything here because the site is under so many changes and updates, so until we move to final stable version of Astrobin rather than Beta still under updates i will just learn more about my equipment and learning processing and enjoy visual sometimes, one day when i will have enough data and good results then i will post here once it is already finished stage, i know there is always updates, but too much updates for me isn't gonna make me feel comfortable at long term, same happened with PixInsight, now it became like a matrix that we have to decode rather than much straight forward software to use.

Keep going Salvatore, it is a great site.

AstroBin has existed for 14 years. Being constantly updated with improvements across the board is a big plus. If it wasn't, it would be considered abandonware smile Having updates doesn't mean that the site is beta, but that it's constantly evolving and improving and adapting.

It is called Beta when this is happening to software, they update software like deaths times and they call two versions, stable and Beta, while it is different with sites for sure, but it is same idea, forever updates is good until it is no longer comfortable, but i don't mind updates if that is what people really look for and need, it is just sometimes i [i won't talk about others] feel that the site is still in-complete then, if something is already excellent and perfect then no need for continues updates and changes, when i started in 2017 until 2019 i felt like Astrobin was much clearer for me, but after Covid i felt like Astrobin is always with new look and changes and i keep asking myself "when they are stop changes and have final look or version", don't get me wrong, you are doing the job to make it better and better, i just wait when you reach that final best stage when you think you need to have a break from changes a bit.

There will never be a final stage. If there was, after 10 years AstroBin would look very dated. Software, and websites, are bound to be continuously evolving. The Internet is still a very fast paced place. Surely you wouldn't prefer a site that is not updated with new fixes and improvements!

You should try the AstroBin from 2017 and I bet you'd be very unimpressed. There have been soooooo manyyyyyy improvements since then.

I am watching the improvements through years for sure, i am here only for 7 years so i can see what's going on, others are here for longer, and i already said it is a great site, what i want is to be clear about the changes and improvements, sometimes i feel it is already great 2-3 years ago and i really didn't ask or look for many improvements or changes, but who knows, you know better, i liked here even from the first time i signed in here, and i didn't complain all those years until i see more and more changes happening after 2021 but i didn't post or complain, i let others to talk and post, and when all are happy then we are happy, and we still here and keep going, there is one complain i have but i won't talk because my needs are all different than you or others.

I would consider a hosting facility to be just that. Your hardware remotely accessed from your home. You own the hardware but not the facility in which it is installed. I don't really think it matters of it's 10 miles or 1000 miles away as far as the definition is concerned.

Yeah I understand your point of view, and you don't want things changing under your nose all the time. Normally, when I make impactful UI changes, I leave the option to stay with the old UI for a long time.

But you need to think of it as in phone updates, operating systems updates, and so on. Of course some updates are about security (and those are mostly invisible to you), and some are bug fixes, but others are to keep up with the times. Many are simply new features. I get requests all the time for new features, I can't make everyone happy due to lack of resources.

Of course, if you use Windows 95 and a Nokia flip phone, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But I just wanted you to understand that everything that has software inside need to either be continuously updated, or quickly become outdated.

Hope this clarifies!
