I’m sure this has been answered before but my searches came up blank. Why does the same image that has been posted months or years ago all of a sudden get several “likes” within a short period of time? As an example, months ago I posted M57 and within the last day or so have received several “likes” seemingly from out of the blue. Thanks.

Several possible reasons.
People may search for an object and if yours comes up they may give it a like which puts it high on the global stream, so then others see it.
Somebody who saw it in the past may recommend it to someone as a good object to photograph
I am sure there are many other possibilities

it happens because one person randomly stumbles upon an old image during an astrobin search, then likes it, or goes to your gallery, finds it and likes it, or is interested about your specific image (might have seen it on Google for example) or the main object in your image, looks for it, finds yours and likes it, then because of that, that image is shown in the Global Stream on the front page, and more likes start coming in because it's very visible, but it'll soon get lost again in the sea of images, and the likes will slow down and stop, until another person finds and likes it

at least that's how I understood it

Yup. Happens to me from time to time, Mostly begins with a search In which someone stumbles on your nice but long ago image and clicks on Like or Bookmark.

That puts the image in the current global stream where others find it. And Like or Bookmark it. Or maybe you post something in a forum that someone thinks is so smart that they wonder who you are and go to your page and find an image they like. Hello? Anyone?

Agree with all the comments and it happens to me as well here and there.
