I think everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, but personally, I think a dislike is total BS. If you want to tell someone you dislike their image, take the 30 seconds required and leave a comment.

Regardless, AB is the best astrophotography community because this function isn't present and would likely be unutilized.

This is a difficult enough task without negative counters tallied against newcomers.

Where exactly are these images with so many likes that aren't good enough that you need to have them disliked? What's the point of that? How does it help the community improve and support each other? The topic subject really says it all. If you want to be like Instagram, be on Instagram. If you want to be a contributing member of Astrobin, find ways to make help each other, not diminish each other's efforts.

Dominik Weinbrenner:
You should handle images you dislike just like this community should handle edgelord topics like this one: see, ignore, and move on with life.

I could have used the dislike-button for this comment of yours. You're an "edgelord" yourself (a ridiculous Anglicism, by the way), acting like this!

The fact that you didn't ignore the topic, as you yourself even recommend, speaks volumes and demonstrates the relevance and also the contradictory nature of your feedback. It's unclear what you're after...

Read up on the word should. And while you’re at it, also learn about the meaning of anglicism as well.

Your topics (#1 & #2) in this forum spread negativity and are far from constructive criticism. Your posts are full of entitlement, bitterness and straight up refusal in terms of agreeing to the terms of service on this site. This is a textbook definition of an edgelord agenda.

Others clearly pointed out what actions are effective regarding constructive criticism and showed where a dislike button falls short in this regard.

You dislike someone’s image and feel compelled to make a point (which again speaks a lot about your self esteem)? Tell them in the comments and deal with the feedback you receive instead of hiding behind a dislike button.

You clearly seem frustrated with this site. Why are you still here?

Brian Diaz:
hi

Thanks for answering me, yes I read everything from the first day, and perhaps my lack of knowledge did not allow me to understand the reason for using a dislike button as a weapon to combat something. Now I know it's a weapon

Let me tell you something you didn't understand from the start when you joined AB.

This isn't a competition or a division of social classes. All images are beautiful. It's a hobby. It's about putting a little bit of yourself into each image. Not about looking at the person next to you to see if their image is prettier and then creating feelings. If they win a TP, or IOTD, if they have more likes. If the goal is to win (likes, IOTD, TP, TPN), then good luck. As I always say, if you're in this hobby with the intention of winning IOTD, sooner or later you'll get hurt.

Thanks for making me understand the intention of the dislike button.

Good luck with that.

And as I always say, don't stop looking at the stars.

CS
Brian

Hi Brian,

sorry, I do not agree. Just telling it is not a competition is not true. Everyone knows that it is a competition, because it has all features of it. I am honest, I started astrophotography, because I see it as a competition. Yes, you can get hurt, but once you win or get positive feedback, it is the opposite. And be sure: I will never stop looking at the stars...

BR,

Klaus

Hi Dominik,

I am still here, because I think we can change it. And change requests are sometimes negative.

And I am here, because I like competition. I is totally interesting to compare results of mine with other imagers results. That is one essential thing, I would never miss...

Furthermore, Astrobin is for me easier than creating an own homepage.

CS,

Klaus

I read this proposal as suggesting one should diss an image in order to elevate one’s own work. Seems kinda mercenary. I, for one, don’t notice or care about getting IOTD. We are creating art, not playing football. The determination of what gets recognized is largely subjective, so what purpose do dislikes serve other than to intimidate mostly newcomers to the hobby?  Would much rather respond to constructive comments.

If you don't like an image, then have the guts to text the photographer back channel and tell them that. It will be an interesting and possibly even constructive conversation.

Wow, what a long list of comments - clear, it is a very sensitive topic. A dislike button - possible without any problems, but what are the criteria to dislike an image? Color? Resolution of details? Composition?

In my opinion, it is just to easy to click "dislike" and it is absolutly not productive and also not fair to the one who posted that image - why? Well, if you don´t like an image, take the one or two minutes and give a constructive feedback - that would be appropriate and much more helpful than just a "dislike".

Another reason - a dislike shows that that person, who gave a dislike just does not appreciate all the time and effort necessary to create that disliked image - it is like a slap in the face without further explanation.

Nobody needs to comment an image, which one does not like, just browse to the next one! I see some images, which I do not like very much, I think, OK, I do not like it, but maybe others do…so OK, I go to the next one.

Well - maybe someone does not like my comments - maybe because my English is not perfect or because of what I stated - that is OK for me as well. English is not my primary language and only one of four, which I think to be able to speak. And astrophotography is a hobby for me and I can learn from every single image, which is posted here.

This topic has been thoroughly discussed, and the overwhelming consensus is that a Dislike button for images is not aligned with the values or goals of AstroBin. I share this view, and as the owner of AstroBin, I can confirm that this feature will not be implemented.

I’m now closing this thread to keep the forum focused on topics related to astrophotography and astronomy.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the discussion.
