The question is for @Salvatore Iovene .

I want to create the minicam8 filters.  I’m not sure how to name them, should I specify only XiMei (mono) and Optolong (color) as the manufacturers or also put QHYCCD and specify somewhere they’re custom made for the Minicam8 ?

Hi @Eric Gagne,

the most important thing when adding equipment to the AstroBin database is to make sure the name are unambiguous and easy to find for other users.

If there isn't an official product name that clears any doubt, then the best name is one that contains words that other people would use when searching to find these filters to find to their images.

Lack of ambiguity is very important, because if you create an entry that could be interpreted to represent multiple actual products/items, people will use it and then it's not possible to know who has what without asking to disambiguate.

If these filters are custom made for the QHYCCD minicam 8, and only work with it, i.e. they cannot be purchased to use with another filterwheel/camera, I would name them like this:

(brand name) (filter type) (filter bandwidth) (filter size) filter for QHYCCD miniCAM 8

Does this help?

Thank you Salvatore.  About the filter size, these aren’t typical sizes like 2” or 1.25”.  They are 19 x 12 x 1.1 so I suppose there’s not point in putting the size in the name.

So I guess something like “XiMei Luminance for QHYCCD Minicam8M”, “XiMei Red for QHYCCD Minicam8M”  etc would do it ?  I would specify Minicam8M for the mono filters and Minicam8C for the color filters since those are the actual model numbers of the two cameras.

Eric Gagne:
so I suppose there’s not point in putting the size in the name

There is no point if the name without the size is future-proof too. Normally, say a new company makes a new filter called XYZ H-alpha Pro, and it's available only in 2" and the official name doesn't feature '2"', you'd think you can omit it to match the official product name.

However, you'd not be future-proof, because the same company might decide to offer a 1.25" filter in the future named XYZ H-alpha Pro 1.25".

AstroBin needs to anticipate these scenarios to avoid future ambiguity.

For the minicam8 filters, I suppose that the size is dictated by the size of the slots in the minicam8, so that's not going to change.

That should do but please double check the capitalization (is it Minicam or miniCAM?).

Thanks!

Hopefully this is OK.  I made a mistake on the H-alpha, I submitted a change request to call "XiMei Ha for QHYCCD miniCAM8M" to be consistent with the SII and OIII.   Thanks for your help.
