Michael: Hi! I am relatively new in the DSO astrophotography and I could use some help in determining what telescope I should get. I have. ASI2600MC Pro AM5N
I was hoping to keep the cost below $2500 but if there is a clear winner like the Esprit 100, I will save up for that. Ideally I would want the telescope to be no slower than native f5.6 (without a reducer) and looking at focal length 400-500. My choices so far are:
FRA400/FRA500 Esprit 100mm ED Triplet APO Askar SQA85 Quintuplet Refractor
I would love to hear from the community on which one out of the four above they consider the best and or what other options I have missed.
Thanks again in advance!
Michael
i have the esprit and it is faultless. I have the 2600 as well and they make a solid combo. Save up and get that you will not be sorry. |

I can recommend the 65PHQ; it's a sharp little monster, and does good at APS-C
but you might get tired of the (sort of) large FOV (416mm FL)
if you want something around 700mm, then I would recommend a 107PHQ I have the ZWO FF107 (identical to PHQ) its a great scope and has a .7x reducer also.

I am using an Askar V. At 384mm it has f/4,8. Maybe not exactly what you are looking for, but as a beginner I love the flexibility to explore different focal lengths for different types of targets.

I was just thinking of the Askar V!!! I do not have anything to compare it with since it is my first telescope, but I am really happy with it. The image quality is probably not as good as with high end refractors but from what I see here its absolutely fine. It also could be faster in the the 600mm configuration, but the flexibility and the portability is a big plus for me.

I just had a look at the photos here on astrobin and liked them. As I said, there might be sharper telescopes, but since it is my first one and I am not a perfectionist, I am fine with it. There are still many other ways how I can mess up my photos. And I have a ASI533 camera which has a small sensor anyway, and BlurXterminator also helps.

Another FRA400 owner here. Love the scope and lately have been using it with the .7x reducer for very wide field images. I also have their 120APO and have become a big fan of Sharpstar/Askar. They’re just killing it with these reasonably priced extremely well made instruments. You can see my latest image with the FRA400 and reducer of the North American and Pelican nebulae on my page using the ASI2600MC PRO and Askar Colourmagic D1 and D2 filters. Given your budget I’d consider the FRA 600 also. The 600mm focal length would make a good general purpose scope, open to a wider range of targets.

Alan Sipling: I have an Askar 400. Totally love the scope. I have 7 telescopes and the little Askar gets used the most. Gives some really good images and is easy to guide. I have the ASI 2600 MM and MC and it works great with both. Great pics Alan!

I'll throw my name against the ASKAR FRA 500 as well…great scope with alot of flexibility (w/reducer) to give you all sorts of options…highly recommended!
