I get it now, I think. They didn't do what I was hoping for - through the mount cabling for USB and power.
It appears the little USB C input port is only for mount control. That's useless to me as the saddle is going to move relative to the computer UNLESS you put the computer on top of the OTA. Then you'll have to use wifi or bluetooth to talk to the computer on the OTA. So, now you need two computers rather than just one. Fine for the AA/iPad crowd, I guess.
That leaves the power port. That does seem to be an output port. However, it only handles 5 amps. So, again, maybe useful for the AA crowd but not much of an advance for the rest of us who might want to run dew heaters (for example).
I'm sending mine back. My fault for assuming that they were going to consider people other than the AA/iPad gang who might want to use the mount.

Ross,
Yeah, it's pretty obvious that they were focused on the ASIAIR crowd. 'cause all the AIR needs from off the saddle is power and mount control. They are assuming the AIR is on the saddle or scope and all communication is by WiFi. In fact, you can't get ethernet to it either.
But, they are certainly hitting me as a target audience for the AM5N as I want it as a super light grab-n-go scope that can be used for visual and photography. Perfect for that use.
My bigazz scope at home (14" Edge, CEM120, pier) is still run by ASIAIR, but I have the ASIAIR on the pier with ethernet and loads of connections and the CEM120 has plenty of thru cable routing for all interfaces. And you can run your own cables thru the DEC Axis.

Seems so, 6A would have been nice, 10A would have been perfect, 3A is useless.

Got my mount yesterday. While the 3A on the saddle is a bit too close to my max power draw of 2.8A, the saddle ports make scope mounted cabling super clean. No more cables crossing RA and DEC axis. Apologize for the messy cables as I was still cable managing them when I took this picture. |
