Spencer: Sounds like you have to adjust your scope on the dovetail to find the balance point where it doesn’t move when you let go of it. Balance the counterweight and scope (2 different points to address)
yeah I already do that ;) but perhaps wasnt very clear. I'm finding it hard to explain.
So I should move my counter weights up the shaft a tiny bit so Ra is top/scope side heavy? Looks like your setup is pushing the limits on the mount. In theory, yes, by moving up the weights will allow the weight of the scope to “assist the motor” by gravity. You should probably look into a bigger mount. If you have to add more counter weights other then what comes with the mount isn’t good long term for the gears and precision.

I use both counter weights at the moment slightly apart and roughly 2/3rds the way down. Bigger one closest to ra axis.

Sorry, yes you can do that, but not to heavy on scope, just a little so that it does not allow to jump in the wind.... With mount small as this a small wind can cause spikes in guiding. So just a little scope heavy!!!
I am limited since I am shooting from roof and through roof window, so bigger mount is out of question. This is setup that I have to pull out maximum from.
I have to take it down to store after a session. So, combined with dodging clouds and escaping rain, even wind I went with smaller is better. And cost, lol.

I was wondering if anyone has upgraded from an EQ Wedge mounted AZ GTI to the SA GTI? Is it a real improvement? Real world payloads (assuming a solid tripod instead of the factory unit), backlash, guiding accuracy, and of course plain simple reliability.

Real world payloads (assuming a solid tripod instead of the factory unit), backlash, guiding accuracy, and of course plain simple reliability. I recently did this exact upgrade as I accidentally overloaded my AZ-GTi and stripped the Az / DEC tension screw by loading my scope before the counterweights. I repaired it once but a couple nights later it stripped again, and I can’t seem to fix it this time :/ Definitely my error, but made me realize how much stress was being put on that screw that it probably wasn’t designed for. I haven’t taken the SA out yet so I can’t speak to its reliability, but it seems way more robust.

I had no problems running this rig when I had my GTI. I think this was about 10lb's. I don't think the 50% rated load rule applies to this mount. |

I don't think the 50% rated load rule applies to this mount. Just for clarity: you run the same rig (Z73 if I am right?) without issues on the AZ GTI + SW wedge as well, that's the message?

Sorry for the confusion - my response was to the original question. I have no experience with the AZ GTi. And yes, Z73 |

I have no experience with the AZ GTi. And yes, Z73 Thanks! My case will be a 2.8/300 nikon telephoto, same weight stuff. I'll give a chance to my old trusted Lightrack ii first, but the lack of fine adjustment on both axis and goto is a pain.

I've been wanting to use my sigma 150-600 sports telephoto (2.1kg) with my Star Adventurer GTi rig, but Im scared I may break it 😆
These weight ratings specified by many of these manufacturers I find confusing. I mean, I bought the mount because it can handle 11kg (assuming 11kg of my gear), but apparently that means including the counter weights.

Its a term we use for telescope heavy, that means that on RA rotation is just a tiny heavy on telescope side. That way guiding is more stable and without jumping. If you have a belt drive you dont have to think about this!!! Question: does the telescope go "up" or "down" in your hemisphere? I'm trying to translate that expression into southern terms to give it a try with my setup... Thanks!

My setup is about 7 kg ( SW 130 PDS, AsiAir, ZWO camera, ZWO OAG, ZWO EAF filter drawer, cables and 3d printed dew shield and Dew vent with cover behind primary mirror) and Total guiding error is from 0.4-0.9 arcs. Balance is a little East heavy on purpose. What PHD2 setting do you have? PHD2 reports that I have backlash above 6000ms. I wonder if the sidereal rate should be 0.5 or 1.0.
