Here is the bottom of the Juwei-17 compared to the TC-40. There is nothing to mount to on the bottom of the Juwei-17, that's why you need either the pier extension or the adapter plate. The adapter plate will bolt to the puck piece of the tc-40 and lock in like normal. You will almost need the pier extension for any scope except very small ones, so I recommend that over just the adapter plate. |

According to this post, the mount should be compatible with the iOptron tripod - given that I already have a CEM40 and its tripod (plus the tripod column extension as well), that means I should be able to get it onto that without issues.
Pulled the trigger, we'll see when it gets here Look forward to seeing how you get on with it.

I would advise getting the pier extension either way which also comes with both the EQ3/5 adapter and the tripod adapter plate (at least mine did). So getting on my EQ5 tripod was a breeze. It doesn't add a lot of cost to the total package. Without a pier any relatively large scope with attachments will quite possibly crash into the tripod.

Pulled the trigger, we'll see when it gets here Happy to report that (finally, it's been a while!) the mount is finally here! Love the blue option I can also confirm that the mount is perfectly compatible with my old CEM40 tripod (also compatible with other ioptron mounts, such as GEM45, HEM27, etc), so definitely did the right choice not to buy the adapter plate/pier extension (I also have an iOptron pier extension too, not shown in the picture, if I want to go that route). I also got an iOptron carbon fibre tripod (8061), still in backorder, which has the exact same base as my current tripod, only lighter (and much cheaper than the ZWO CF tripod) As a bonus, I found out that my CEM40 (first 2020 version, not the second) counterweights are also compatible Proper testing will have to wait, since, as per long standing tradition, it is obviously cloudy |

I got one of those cheaper carbon fiber tripods off Aliexpress to try out with it, I'm only putting 10lb of equipment on it anyways. Here's a bottom comparison.

If I'm getting this straight, the Juwei 17 swivels onto the tripod base itself, while the 14 has the bottom part divided in two, and the top part swivels onto the bottom part, am I correct?

The Juwei-17 needs either another adapter or a specific tripod to function correctly. The Juwei-14 has a more complete base with a built in method to adjust Azimuth for polar alignment, more like the AM5/AM3. I use the pier extension for my J17 and it works fairly well but can still shift somewhat since the center post isn't exactly the right size for the bottom hole of the mount.

Got the J14 rig completed with one of the Bexin tripods off Aliexpress, feels solid. I do wish the mount lined up exactly with a leg, but there's always a trade off going cheap, this tripod doesn't have any way to adjust the pointing direction since the plate just screws into the mount with a 3/8" bolt. |

You might have just sold me on this mount! I've been interested in a zwo am5 for a very long time, but like most, I could not afford it. This seems like a great option. I also saw someone mention the Juiwei 14, and that looks even more affordable.

I've bought many things from him so I would say he's reliable. The ebay guy has it marked up crazy high, not sure why. There have been a few issues, but nothing that wasn't able to be fixed that I know of. I haven't been able to try out the J14 just yet, bad weather all week here.

Thanks for letting me know. Theirs is marked at nearly the same price I bought my current mount for. Please let me know how the J14 performs if you get clear skies!

Ali Alobaidly:
I've had this mount for three months now, I'd say it's completely interchangeable with my AM5, they are nearly identical in performance so far. I love open source projects like Onstep and other free software like Nina and phd2, they developers that write the code for these programs are heroes in my mind. I built a DIY onstep mount a few years ago and wished something like the Juwei-17 would come along some day. The J17 is exactly what I was hoping for, a quality piece of equipment designed for Onstep.
Edit: the Gemini focuser sold on Aliexpress is pretty good as well for almost half the price of the zwo eaf. I agree, us consumers are well taken care of by these developers and their worth to the community should never be understated. I’m glad to hear others have a similar good experience with the mount, makes me feel a lot better about making such a positive review despite the issue I faced when the mount first arrived.
I’m very interested in these little known companies from china so maybe I’ll give the Gemini a try soon!
Clear Skies! Totally agree and love my J17 so far. I also purchased a Wanderer Rotator and then needed to order a Gemini flip flat panel for my 8" sct from Aliexpress. Now I'm able to use NINA's task scheduler plugin and rotate as needed with every target and take my flats immediately after each target before slewing and rotating for the next target.

Just wanted to stop back in a let you know my J14 works great for my intended purpose of a super lightweight rig. I put it on a tc-40 tripod and can carry it with one finger around the yard. I'm only planning to use it with my Askar fra400 and it only has a vixen size saddle, but it works great for me. I can easily manage 300s exposures at 400mm with the Askar. https://www.astrobin.com/du77tc/ |

Kudos for the information you've provided in this thread (and on CN), very informative. If you don't mind me asking, as I see you've used both the J-14 and J-17 for some time now - I already have an EQ6R rig that's almost permanently set up, and I've been debating which of these two to go with for a second, very light and portable camera lens setup I'm about to build out. Initially the J-14 looked very appealing because of it's low weight and small footprint, but I'm worried I'd regret it down the line when it comes to potential future purchases. The J-17 can accomodate a much larger range of scopes for a relatively small penalty in regards to weight and footprint. So my question to you is, would you agree with my sentiment and gone with the J-17 in my situation?

I would definitely say the J17 over the J14, especially if it's only a couple hundred dollars different still. It's still very light weight and works perfectly with the tc-40 tripod and the pier extension on Aliexpress.
