Hi!

I started with an AM5, with good results. However, the astrophyscis Mach2 Gto is on another level. PHD2 graphs are almost flat, with very few corrections. I use it on a steel pier, and my EdgeHD is with a Moonlite focuser and OAG.

Kind regards

At nearly 5 times the cost, I would hope so!

Good stuff is not cheap, like almost everything in this hobby. But I'm not inventing the wheel by saying that first come the mount, and then...the mount. I will always recommend to go with the better mount that his finances can afford.

Hi.

I'm looking for a new mount for my EdgeHD 9.25 (my old mount was a CGX that died on me) with a full image train. Portability is not relevant for me and I only do astrophotography.

The CEM70 looks interesting but I was wondering what you guys use with a payload of this size - and maybe what you can recommend and/or have experience with.
I haven't settled on a budget just yet but I'm thinking somewhere around $4000 give or take.

I have the CEM70ec with my C925. Interestingly enough my CGX mount was giving me no end of grief, so I got this mount to replace it. It is a very stable mount, no issues handling this sort of weight, I'm sure it will hold more. I'm impressed how well it works even in the wind to keep stable tracking, it is just so much more stable and better tracking than the CGX. I bought it with the encoders so that I would not need to guide. This does mean I have to set a manual tracking rate with the encoders depending on the sky position, to get the best tracking, as the King rate to compensate did not work as well as what I could set. Manually I can get at least 5 minutes no guiding, but I have not pushed this since my LP is limiting me.

But note, if you are guiding you have to turn off the encoders, so it makes no sense to get the encoders if you plan to guide.

There are adjustments for backlash available through set screws, so there is no reason one cannot get to low backlash with the proper adjustment. Again, not guiding, the backlash is irrelevant anyway.

So with the ec, you can run well with the C925 and not guide, but not sure what the upper limit on no guiding is for exposure time. I have no experience with guiding, if that is what you want to do.

Went from hae69ec to a used mach 2.  About double the cost.  But the tracking and quality, polar aligning, value retention and customer support is leagues above.    I’ll be able to sell it for what I paid in 10 years.   The Mach 2 is just completely transparent and really doesn’t need guiding at 5 minutes with the Nina 3 point polar align.   If I’m having issues with stars, it’s because of seeing or wind.   It is much heavier and not what I’d consider portable but is worth it for me.   They all have their place and it’s great to have so many solid choices

Previous EQ-6R Pro owner here who upgraded to a CEM-70G (no encoders). As others have posted, EC not needed if you are guiding. EQ-6Rs are VERY heavy compared to the higher capacity CEM-70s, not something you want to set up and tear down much less lug out to a dark sky site. The CEMs are fussier to balance but the guiding is better. I have a backyard Observatory with a permanent pier with total RMS averages 0.20-0.30 - after a good 3-point alignment and everything is balanced - with 40+ pounds of refractor and a mono AP optical train. I don’t regret the upgrade. If I had the money I would have went with a 10Micron or an AP.

Could you share more details. I have an AM5n, waiting for the Edge 9.25 to be delivered at the moment. (and it's cloudy as far out as the forecast goes, so I don't know when I will get to test)

Actually I am using with success a RC10  (tube version) that is 18kg (36lb) with equipment and the mount is Warpastron WD-20  that is able to support a maximum load of  30kg (60 lb). This mount is an harmonic drive with direct connection (almost no backslah). the minimum total RMS I got with that mount and the RC10 was 0.32" of arc with good seing condition. Normal seing condition I am between 0.44 and 0.70 " rms  and bad seing  around  0.90" .

Consider an Avalon Linear, high quality in a truly premium mount at the right price. Very precise Go-To and guiding error under 0.4". I had it on test for 3 months used, now I'm waiting for the superior model, the new Avalon M-Uno. My advice is to leave Chinese mounts alone, the quality of production is variable, 3 are good, 3 are just ok and 4 are bad. My last Chinese, Celestron CGX, after 3 years of discrete operation is now to be thrown away.
