On a related but less technical branch, one could watch Continuum and find inspiration for new astronomy prospects : https://youtu.be/AOkva1V-6W4

I don't get the resentment about certain channels that have relationships with vendors and manufacturers, especially the heat that AstroBackyard gets from a few people.

Yea.. I understand the preference of getting a perceived unbiased/honest review from someone who has purchased the gear themselves, but this is really an unrealistic expectation for a large YouTube Channel.   Most people don't have the resources to buy tons gear just to review.

I do get the negative connotations that come with being an influencer, but again we're not talking about tiktok and the tide pod challenge.  I think it's wrong to conflate these astro channels with the social media influencers.

It takes a lot of effort to create content that people will want to watch.  If you have never edited a video, then you have no idea how much work and time goes into it.  Quite frankly, processing an astro image is easier than putting out a quality video.  My videos are bare bones and it still takes me longer to put one together than it does to process an image.

AstroBackyard is one of the few examples where the channel is their day job (Nebula Photo's is another).  The earnings from YouTube is not enough to live off of.  For example, my little channel had over 100,000 views and over 10,000 hours of watch time last year and I made $500 from it (Uncle Sam took 50% of that too!, lol  smile ).  So these guys have to earn their money through other means (Affiliate links, Patreon, etc).

If you don't like the product reviews.. then don't watch them and let the man earn his bread.  I enjoy his other videos. like his travel videos, neaf reports, star parties, and meeting other astrophotographers.  His overall story telling is very good.. and his video production is the best out there among Astrophotography channels.

I have recently started an "Astrophotography Deep Dive" series on my youtube channel (The Space Koala), where every 2-3 weeks I delve into a topic providing in-depth explanations of concepts that are often regarded as too basic or obvious - then it turns out they're not.

Some YouTubers exist to be entertainers first and informative second, which is fine imo. But with such a technical hobby, it is sure to rub some people the wrong way.

I think a good comparison is LTT vs GamersNexus in the PC space. LTT focuses more on being entertaining (while still being fairly informative), while GamersNexus focuses more on the technical aspect. Both are good, both fill a role within the community.

Also, arguably, the entertainers are the ones that are going to get people interested in the hobby first, and then they'll branch out to more informative sources when they want to dig deeper.

I just noticed nobody mentioned Delta Astrophotography.  It’s one of my favourites.  No big sponsor, no reviews or placement.

Walt is all about sharing his passion and teaching and he does it with humour.

I 100% agree! I love his channel and enjoy every video, even if it has nothing to do with my setup or photography. He’s hilarious and a nice change of pace.

The channel that helped me the most starting out was Nico’s Nebula Photos. I had never used Photoshop and his step by step tutorials got me going! I also don’t have Pixinsight yet and it’s a little more difficult to find solid Photoshop only tutorials.

I’d love some recommendations for any channels with photoshop tutorials!

Hi, folks.
It's nice that someone has resurrected this 18-month old topic as it's always good to get new tips.

I've assembled a complete list of every YouTube channel that has been mentioned in these posts for easy reference and added a couple not yet mentioned.

Here they are, in alphabetical order. The host's name is in parentheses if available and is not already in the channel name.  Apologies if I have misspelt any.

Cheers.
Paul
