Hi,

I'm interested in your opinions of best software for stacking planetary images.

1. Best software overall?
2. Best software in terms of minimum computer spec needed? Example, can an i5, 500gB ssd, spec capture and process effectively, with some stacking software better than others?

Is there much difference between stacking software for planets?

Thanks

Mark

I suspect the consensus would be that AutoStakkert is the premiere planetary staking software out there.

I use both AutoStakkert and RegiStax...sometimes in combination.  One can also save the images files and then use WBPP in Pixinsight, but I've had better luck with the first two.  Most of my recent use of the first two has been for solar imaging where one may have 40GB SER files.

I personally use AutoStakkert for stacking, and RegiStax for sharpening.
You can do everything in RegiStax, but I like the workflow with AutoStakkert better.

You may also want to give AstroSurface a try. I never used it, but I heard some good reviews.

An i5 is ok. I think the CPU is not really going to be the bottleneck, assuming you have a decent one. SSD and a good amount of RAM is important.

*Thanks. So, in theory I can use the same laptop for capture and processing planetary images. If only I could do that for dso AP.

+1 for AutoStakkert and RegiStax for planetary imaging. AutoStakkert uses a lot less memory and is faster than stacking a DSO with PI or DSS.

I would agree Autostakkert4 is superior, along with being paired with RegiStax for sharpening.  Before I started using those programs I used AstroSurface which does both stacking and sharpening.  I would say there is little to no difference in the images I would get between those programs but Autostakkert4 and RegiStax are in my opinion more intuitive than AstroSurface.

Currently clearly Autostakkert!4.
FireCapture 2.7 for recording.
RegiStax5 and PixInsight for sharpening.
WinJupos 12 for derotation.
