I have never seen something like this before, and are guessing on a small meteor or something. 
Have you seen something like this before, or can you explain in more detail what it might be?

The flares are there because of wind shear moving the evaporating particles away from the main meteor path. A VERY lucky strike, that.

Yup. Nice. I have seen those lingering "vapors" with binoculars a couple times from a dark site. They are pretty cool and often twist and turn for seconds or even minutes in the high altitude winds.
