Salvatore Iovene:
Ruediger: I have made a very quick and dirty POC and packed an AES128 encrypted payload text in one of my images in order to test feasibility. I have cropped it to 600px, which is sufficient for this test. The payload text is:
"I have uploaded this file on AstroBin on 23.05.2023 User: Ruediger"
What editing operation is the hidden information going to survive? If you open it in Photoshop or Gimp or anything, and mess with it (crop / change curves / etc) at which point is the information lost, if any? This depends on the way you inject the payload. The fronted I used, injects it only once. Hence it is sensitive to such modifications. But a quick search gave me some hints for much more robust injections (redundant, error correcting, multi dimensional....) . As far as I have seen, there are approaches which a fairly robust against cropping and even non-linear modifications. The POC was more to show, that it works also for our purpose with large, dark areas, which are prone to noise... and "noise" is actually where the hidden data resides. And this is a weak point: Noise reduction will probably the biggest enemy for such a payload. But it raises the effort for the black heats and the have to know what to do.

Salvatore Iovene: The fact that there exists a pinned guide on how to report this, and somebody like the people behind AstroCreditHunters who spends time exporins these frauds, makes me wonder if this isn't a bigger problem than I thought, and if I should do something to improve proof of ownership on AstroBin (hidden digital signatures, NFTs, something I haven't investigated yet). Somehow, I think its impossible to stop image fraud. However some sort of random micro dot on images while not detracting from the image quality maybe an option. Digital tagging is hard these days, but I'm sure in the AB or cloudynights there will be someone who can figure something out to protect the work that we the astro community do in this amazing subject.

Have we just been hit by this one crazy guy or is this an pandemic? If it is the former I do not think we should overreact and impose mechanisms that makes life difficult for ourselves.

No additional steps or effort required. Only in case of verification.

If it is the former I do not think we should overreact and impose mechanisms that makes life difficult for ourselves. This is the third time I've seen images being copied. They have been 3 different users. It's topic that needs to be addressed, I tend to think that our images are bring used without consent more and more. Its the same as email scams, account fraud, its almost as bad as some stealing money from your bank account.

We over at AstroCreditHunters stay busy enough. Not a pandemic, but with the sample size on Instagram, and knowing that it’s happening all over (especially on Twitter), it wouldn’t hurt to look into it.

That Image is so beautiful I created an account just to say that I've been staring at it for the past hour! Honestly I have never seen such beauty on one website before.

This guy is a clown. He steals images and claims them as his own. Thievery! If he took your image and gave you credit then that would be a different story. This guy needs to go down.
Be aware: He deactivates his account when the heat is on so you think its been taken down, but then activates it later once things cool down.

For information, I have yet to receive a reply or even an acknowledgement from Instagram to the report I filed on the theft of my image. Its only been two days or so, but this slowness suggests Instagram don't have sufficient resources to devote to this, or don't consider a priority {same thing really). This is consistent with the experience of people earlier in this thread. Given the comment by @3SistersAstronomy (and thanks for performing this service) this is clearly something that AB needs to address to protect the IP rights of users who pay to use this service. Some of the suggestions above look really interesting and I commend those who are trying to find a effective solution to this problem. No solution, no subscription.

In the past I have fought against image stealing in another platform (Flickr) with great success, by using the misconduct reporting tools provided by the platform. I think that's the best we can do nowadays. As a photographer I am well aware that whenever content is uploaded online, its creator has lost the control of its distribution. That's why I don't expect miracles to happen regarding intellectual property protection. Also, I don't believe IG or others will seriously bother with us unless there is an IP misconduct with a substantial monetary footprint. There are some recent academic papers available regarding the subject of screen-shooting resistant watermarking but I don't know if it is worthwhile to implement such algorithms. (But.. I am by no means an expert in the topic of steganography or intellectual property infringement ).

I don't use IG, Facebook, or any other social media other than Astrobin. It seems the simplest solution is to bombard his site with comments and complaints about him stealing images and passing them off as his own. Perhaps this would reveal the "man behind the curtain" for what he really is and and expose him to his followers and family. Not an ideal fix, but the more who know about this who don't engage in this hobby will see him for what he is as well. Peer pressure can be a wonderful motivator.
CS to all,
Patrick

CS to all,
Patrick The problem is he disabled comments and instantly blocks anytime someone confronts him. If you attend to message his followers, you messages go into the “request” box and they might not ever see it if you are not following one another.

I just received my response to the report I filed with Instagram.
I include the link to the Astrobin page with my image, with the copyright watermark in corner and a link to Mr Woods instragram page with my image (watermark clearly removed). I noted that he had clearly passed off the image as his own, and asserted my ownership of the original image based on the details on the astrobin wesite. I further noted that I used my images for a (small) astronomy education business.
Instagram responded after 3 days asking how I considered this to be an infringement of my copyright.
Perhaps I should have made my report via the medium of interpretative dance?
Not sure how to respond to that one.

Please let us know if you need any close ups and I can provide them with links. The links you can use to file an intellectual property thief report. Our pinned guide is at the top of AstroCreditHunters feed.

Not sure how to respond to that one. Just fight them and tell them you will get your lawyer involved (even if you won't). I've had to do this a few times and they usually just give and take the image down.

Here is my image, with EXIF and text from my Instagram page. From what I can see, it appears to have been cropped it on an angle and edited the image slightly. Plus I also recognise the features of all my own images. Zak |

Not sure how to respond to that one. That's a bit of a lowlife response to be honest... They should be supporting situations like this, not fobbing it off like they have done with you... I have had to make my Instagram accounts private now due to this. I will only approve people on a case by case basis. Hopefully with an influx of people reporting about this Instagram will ACTUALLY do something about this. Zak
