Hello everyone,I’m excited to announce that version 2 of the Moon and Darkness Calendar is now live! After receiving great feedback from the community, I’ve gone through all your comments and suggestions, and I’ve implemented many of them - though it did involve rewriting much of the code. My main goal was to keep the interface as clean and simple as version 1, while adding useful new features. URL is still the same: https://dersphere.github.io/moon-and-darkness-calendar/Here are the major changes in version 2- Inline Times for Key Events: Now, key times like moonrise, moonset, and the start/end of astronomical night can be displayed directly in the bars. These appear on hover, but for mobile users, there’s a global toggle to show or hide them.
- Hour Markers: Full hour markers can now be displayed in the bars. Like the inline times, these appear on hover or can be globally toggled on.
- Overlap Bar: I’ve added a green overlap bar between the darkness and moon bars to clearly highlight periods of ideal conditions for stargazing (let’s ignore the weather for now!).
- Night Details: Instead of showing night details on hover (which isn’t ideal for mobile users), you can now click on a day to view all the details—such as the durations of different darkness levels and comprehensive moon data.
- Moon Phase & Illumination: You can now see the moon phase and illumination percentage directly next to the day indicator, without needing to hover or open overlays.
- Improved Location Search: Added autocomplete functionality for location searches, along with the option to input coordinates directly or use reverse coordinate lookup.
- Help & Info Sections: The new version includes detailed help and info sections, covering everything from how to use the app to explanations of key terms. You can also view the full changelog and easily send me feedback or feature requests.
Here are some screenshotsDetail Section expanded: This is how it looks when the modes for inline-times and hour-lines are both enabled: I hope these updates make the tool even more useful for you! I’d love to hear your thoughts on version 2, and if there’s anything else you’d like to see improved or added, please feel free to reach out. I’ve enjoyed building this tool and would love for it to reach more people who might find it useful. If you know of any websites, forums, or any other thing where this tool could be shared, I’d appreciate any suggestions. Feel free to share the app directly if you think others would benefit from it! regards, Tristan

Bill McLaughlin: ... it would be nice to also have them display on the graph somewhere and although the city will get you pretty close it might be nice to allow lat/lon input as well. Is now done in version 2, thanks for the suggestion! John Hayes: ... I'd like to enter Lat/Lon so that I can put in the exact location of Obstech. ...Also seeing an indication of moon phase would be a nice addition. I could live with a percentage number showing on the moon bar, which should be really easy to add.
John Both are now done; thank you for the idea! Richard Carande: ...I always record the moon details in my logs, and include the rise/set time and as well as percent illuminated. I've had to go to two sites to gather this info up to now (although maybe there's another site I don't know of that has it readily available). I've book marked this page and will use it from now on.
One suggestion is to have the percent illumination as a column on the side, maybe next to the date, just to make it more obvious. Also, it would be nice to have the rise/set times explicitly typed out within the grey bar. The expandable night details in version 2 should hopefully help you with your records. I would suggest changing the days-shown to 1 and then clicking the night. Percent illumination is now also shown on the left, thanks! Dave Rust: ... Regarding moon phase, why not keep it visual and just have the horizontal gray bars get dimmer with shrinking phase. An easy hex coding effort for HTML. Was done in version 1.2. Was a great idea, thanks! (However, this part was more complex than I thought - not just "easy hex coding" :-)) Christian Bennich: Great with the additional info that’s currently implemented as mouse hovering. Mouse hovering is difficult on a mobile, it would be great if the info could be made more visual as already suggested.
Will check out the site from my laptop….as soon as I get out of bed 😂😂😂 Now in version 2 you should be able to tap a night-row to get the details (even when you are in bed 😂). Just one suggestion, but perhaps it is my iPad, the location does not show a drop-down menu and I’m not sure if I’m looking at the right place. Now there is a dropdown in version 2. In version 1, it simply selected the best result. AstroShed:
Now in version 2 the extra info is shown on tap, thanks for the suggestion!=14pxMarkus Selbach (markus.selbach) This is very usefull - thanks for publishing. May I ask to add an on tap event so that the popover with the details also opens in mobile browsers? It is now done in version 2 (but I replaced all tooltips with a dedicated expandable detail section). Bill McLaughlin: What I think is maybe the most useful number for an imager might be worthwhile adding to the hover and that is the number of hours of total darkness available on that night. The total available time in hours is still partly todo but at least there is now a green bar to show exactly this time period. Do you have a specific idea in mind where/how to show the hours as you suggested? Would the expendable detail section be enough? ... I would like a more clear indication on what location is actually used, rather than just having it show lat-long in the url. In particular, when pressing the "Use my location" button, I would like to see a response that tells me what location/city it found. When using this function on a computer, it may well use the location of my ISP, which can be quite far away. Thanks for your recent replies. I now added a reverse lookup so that you can check how accurately the geolocation worked. Also you can enter exact coordinates (and then bookmark the resulting address). Markus Selbach:
Can you tell me what the most important details for you are? Just the details that are currently displayed in a non mobile browser like moon visibility, phase and illumination. And I would also vote for the total hours of darkness that @Bill McLaughlin proposed 👍 I added some more to version 2. If you have any more ideas please reach out!

Thanks for developing this, very useful! I wonder if it could be added to Astrobin as a menu item? CS, Tony.

Hi @Tristan Fischer, This looks absolutely amazing! Super useful and great layout and overview! Thanks so much for putting together! I like the detail information 'dropdown' with all the times and data. Even the nautical/civil darkness is handy (I often take a few more images after astro darkness ends). One small request, can you add sunset and sunrise for completeness? Cheers, Niels.

Ali Alhawas: Quick and easy app. Thanks Tristan.. One note: When I print as PDF, the time label (In the first row, which is from 12:00 to 12:00) not shown. Please see the picture: Interesting, works here. Which Browser, Operating-system (win11, win10, MacOS etc) and (in case you know) which PDF-printer/driver are you using? (And I assume you manually removed your location, or do you have a big black rectangle there?). Anyway, thanks for reporting!

aghhh my eyes! Joke aside, this is a great app, very handy. Thank you very much. I was looking for something like this to place an image of the moon phases for the current month as a background screen image on my laptop. The print option works fine for the purpose. Perhaps adding a one click option to put a background screen might add value to an already very nice app. Thanks again for sharing. Cheers!
