DavesView: Jerry Gerber: You can fix that: Go to Windows Group Policy Editor-Local Computer Policy-Computer Configuration-Administrative Templates-Windows Components-Remote Desktop Services-Remote Desktop Session Host-Connections
Now open Configure Keep-Alive Connection Interval . Enable it and choose an interval in minutes, I chose 1 (1 minute). Click OK.
This will cause RDC to keep connection alive even without activity. *So I thought I had this fixed, but it turns out I did not. What I did find that works is the following: gpeditor/Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Shutdown Options-Setting-Turn off automatic termination of applications that block or cancel shutdown (enable). My remote PC has stayed up 36 hours without disconnect or shutdown

Well heck! Still dealing with this issue. It turns out that Windows is not the culprit. My new Pegasus UPBv3 has an issue. When I power the remote PC with the OEM power supply, everything works fine. The Pegasus has an issue with the transient peaks mitigation algorithm. Pegasus Astro is working on a fix.

I think a lot of these programs are fairly mature right now. VPN, Windows Remote and Chrome remote all seem to work well. It's certainly very easy to make it all work these days……

I use Anydesk with my distant PC and the Asiair system, emulated for Windows by Bluestacks (Asiair works on Android). Anydesk is quite reliable. But it took some time to have things running properly, because the connection between the PC and Asiair is possible only by wifi, and it was not very stable. The solution came from an assistant at Astrocamp, when turning the PC into… flight mode !

I am really surprised that few have suggested Remote Desktop. I use that for my remote site and it has been great. Since it is a division of iDrive there is also a built in file transfer system that one can optionally use. It is as little as $23 for the first year and not that much more thereafter.

Jerry Gerber: How do you keep Chrome Remote from quitting after 10 or 30 minutes? I am told there's a limit! There must be a workaround in order to do astrophotography!
Thanks, Jerry I use CRD on two scopes--one with a PIN and one without. I've never seeing it quit after 10-30 minutes. It will run all night if I let it. If you are losing connection, you've got a network glitch somewhere. John

I have been running an independent remote observatory now for almost 15 years. I began with a KVM over IP that was very clunky. I then went with Dameware Mini Remote Control, by parent Solarwinds, yes the same who had the major backdoor security breach a few years back. They made changes that rendered the product useless for running the observatories 8 computers, over a DSL connection. I then migrated to RemotePC, a very robust and reliable solution. That is until a recent version with extreme latency issues, version 7.6.84. This version has rendered this product useless over DSL taking more than a minute for the cursor to move. I am in the process of migrating to Chrome Remote Desktop (CRD), with the 12 computers that run instruments on the mountain. It works very well, and (5) of the computers have made the transition. With a PIN it hasn't timed out. I need to be conservative here as an error may damage equipment that is a 6 hour round trip drive to fix. The mountain is truely remote, no power, no water, no sewer, but a microwaved in DSL internet connection and a shared microwaved in phone line for system main power switching control. I have a well for water, a composting toilet, and solar panels for power.. I also have Starlink but not enough solar panels on-line at the moment to run it. I am considering writing my own software to end the endless migration... John I use CRD on five rigs. No issues--no disconnections. I do, however, have PINs on all five. I stay connected to all five rigs 24/7/365. I have a license for AnyDesk, but just as a backup. Lloyd is adamant that I have two ways in. The nice thing about CRD is that I can use it very easily on every device I have--desktop, iPad, iPhone, laptop. Just two nights ago, one camera was misbehaving and needed to be power cycled. I did it on my phone while we were out to dinner with friends. The best thing about CRD is that it's free.

Just came upon this thread. As with the others, CRD works flawlessly for me, with no time limits. I start my imaging from a home laptop, then when things are up and running, I disconnect it and reconnect with my iPad to monitor progress, at least till it’s time to turn in.
CS, Bob

Another Chrome Remote Desktop user. Swapped to CRD from Windows Remote Desktop about 6 months ago (which I like and still use occaisionally). Zero issues with CRD so far. To me, they each have their advantages. Personally, I like the CRD interface better. I like seeing my host pc (desktop) where CRD is windowed and to me it is easier to navigate the remote pc and the host pc menus. I also like the iphone/ipad app better than the iphone/ipad WRD app (RD Client) as far as navagability especially with my older eyes. They each have their advantages. To me, it is much easier to copy files to my desktop pc with WRD than CRD, but I like the CRD userability experience much more. I use my desktop to get the session started (except PA), then just pop in on my ipad several times during the night to check on things. Teamviewer worked very well for me for years when I was using a laptop outside to control the rig. No issues with disconnections with any of the applicaitons.

I've used many different remote desktop applications through the years as I need it for work. For my work clients, I have them use Splashtop SOS. It's easy to have them go to my website and download it and works really well. Plus it's very affordable. Regarding the scope connection, I actually find using two things the best.
1.) VNC allows multiple connections. This is handy because when I first setup, I can take my tablet outside and dial in the polar alignment.
2.) Windows RDP is by far the fastest for me on a local network. The other big advantage is that I can use my triple monitor setup on the remote PC. I do this after polar alignment is complete and it works quite well.
In any case, the remote PC needs a good network connection. If it's a remote site, you don't really have any control. If it's local, just make sure you have a good setup. I use a Ubiquiti Unify system and have a dedicated access point directed to the front yard where I do my observing.

Rob Johnson: Just a note of caution, stay clear of NoMachine (free) I used it for a while succesfully then discovered via a forum it stored 50Gb yes Gb on my PC, what the blazes for I do not know. I'm now using MS remote desktop when I found you can use it with Win 10, works great! After using several other solutions, I find NoMachine works the best of them all. Not only is it faster, but especially much better image quality. Never had a problem with storage issues.

This question has been asked before. The consensus is, there are a lot of good solutions out there. It really comes down to the details of your setup. For most people the Chrome or Microsoft solution will work extremely well.
