I have a modified Canon T3i, I’d like to start using it for Milky Way shooting which I have never done. I have the 18-50mm kit lens and a nifty 50. The only places I have access to outside my town are under bortle 4 skies.
is this possible ? Can I do Milky Way imaging under bortle 4 sky ?

is this possible ? Can I do Milky Way imaging under bottle 4 sky ? Yes you can!! I’ve imaged the Milky Way under bottle 3 and bottle 5!! If using tripod only then you’ll need to stack to get better results, if using a tracker then you don’t really have much to worry about when it comes to a single image I use a stock canon 7d Mk2 with a 16-35mm f2.8 lens

Yeah I have the 2i and the recent string aurora activity recently gave me the reason to take it out and give it a spin!! I managed to get that Milky Way Core Image on my page under bortle 3 skies with the tracker!! Stack of 5 images of various exposure lengths

I have a Canon T3 and I have captured the Milky Way from my backyard on a fixed tripod. I live right beside Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Check on a light pollution map to see where that is, the zone is orange-red. I was able to do it when the Milky Way was overhead with the nifty fifty. But to achieve this, the Milky Way has to be overhead.

I did this with my Canon 10-18 mm lens, although the Milky Way was lower. I used a Nisi Natural Night filter for this; same location and sky conditions. I also developed a workflow to fatten the stars to make them pop out as it became the basis of my method of converting my images to star charts. 
Backyard Milky WayI just finished a composite, same conditions. Sure the Veil Nebula doesn't pop out like in polished deep sky images, but you can see it. Pretty good considering no tracking and no dark sky. Let me know how your efforts work out @Eric Gagne .

My home area is bortle 4 skies and this was taken about 2 weeks ago. So yes, you can easily shoot Milky Way. This was taken with a Z9 and the 15mm f2 lens. Certainly, the extra aperture helps but you can still do great shots under those skies.  |

As others have pointed out, it's certainly possible to capture Milky Way shots in Bortle 4 areas. Thought I'd contribute to this post though as I shot the following image with the same camera as you - a modded Canon T3i/600D. I used a 14mm lens and a star-tracker for about 45 mins of total integration.
