Hey all. So I have this 65phq paired with a 294mm pro. Bin 1 is oversampled, bin2 is undersampled.  I’m consistently getting guiding around 1/4” or lower so that’s not a factor.

Are you really oversampled at bin 1? With that setup, you have an image scale of 1.14"/pixel, right? So to be oversampled, your average seeing (fwhm's of the stars in your images) would need to be 3 to 4" or worse.

Anyhow, I would go with 'oversampling' even if, you can recover some undersampled detail with decon, but I generally wouldn't trade detail resolution at the start for more snr. fwiw

Cheers,
Scott

I use a ASI183MM/294MM paired with a 70/350mm TS scope. With 2.4mm/2.315mm pixel size, you are in a very good spot sampling wise for usual conditions. So like @Scott Badger said, there must be something wrong with your calculations or your interpretation of the results. There is quite a bit of range where you can use this setup without caring about over-/undersampling.

I always use the 183MM with Bin 1 and the 294MM with Bin 2 on this scope, although the seeing allows to go for Bin 1 on the latter as well. The problem with Bin 1 on the 294MM is the bit depth. With the full resolution, you only use 12Bits of brightness values. With Bin2 you are at 14 Bits and have much more dynamic range (about 4x). There is also the "problem" of the huge file sizes for the subs. At 46 MPixel it is a pain in the a*** to process a series of subs taken over multiple nights. My PC would run forever and I have to store the subs somewhere. I never felt the need to go for Bin1 and I am totally happy with the 11MPixel resolution.

Saying that, I doubt that any of your possible choices would be a problem at all with the combinations of your equipment.

If you are really oversampled, you will notice a significant increase of the needed exposure time for your subs compared to your regular imaging experiences. I had this going from an 6" f/5 Maksutow Newton to a 10" f/5 Newton with 1270mm focal length some years ago. The images were much darker even at f/5.

Hope this helps.
