Claudio Boicu: if you are up for it, I would really like to see how people would edit my data, in particular my Heart Nebula and SNR HB3 - SHO data. let me know if you would like the stacked frames, will need to restack them tho Sure!

Médéric Hébert: To anyone using my data, please send me your results, I'd like to see what can be done out of it, I know it's not great data and I'm not the best at post processing but I'd like to see how far it can go @Médéric Hébert Here is my quick try,
palette is SHO with RGB stars, processed with PI and PS:

P.S. MGC is really a great tool; the RGB had a gradient that GC was not removing - MGC removed it very well (I cared about the gradient originally because I was thinking I could merge the starless RGB with the SHO, but the RGB starless was not a helpful addition - I left it out) Okay, this is just amazing, any advice or link to a tutorial? Thanks a lot!

Thanks a lot! I don't know of any tutorials I used the ColorMask script to control the colors like that; other stuff is pretty standard, like russ croman tools, (except SXT - I use Starnet instead) if you have any more specific questions I can answer them

Tony Gondola: I've been sitting on the fence about going from OSC to mono imaging for a long time now. I'd love to have a complete LRGB data set to process out to get a better feel for what I'd be getting into. Does anyone know of a data set that's publicly available? I have been straddling that fence for a year, literally it seems, as I have purchased everything [EFW, all filters, the mono camera] and I have been paralyzed at the thought of processing the data. I admit to being a bit lazy so the OSC works for me albeit I know that mono is the real deal. So thank you for the post, and a shout out to everyone kind enough for us for the data to process. For some it is extremely intimidating.

my google drive has a bit of a problem at the moment, so here is a wetransfer link, good for 30 days https://we.tl/t-vq7mvdJtcceveryone that uses my data, let me know what you pull out of it!

I did two passes at this data. 1st is RGB with RGB stars. 2nd is NB only with RGB stars. All IP was done using PI. CS Tim BTW I have both 2600's and both of the 533's and a 1600mmPro. I use my mono's at every opportunity. True, it takes longer to capture at dataset, but the juice is worth the squeeze!

One of the things that I am realizing from this exercise pertains to RGB color fidelity. When I shoot OSC, even with a UV/IR cut, I struggle to get decent RGB stars and much color at all in galaxies yet it's so easy with the data that I've worked with in the thread. I think that's because of the purity of the color data in RGB imagine. Compared to OSC imaging, the RGB bands are very narrow and discreet while in OSC there's a great deal if crosstalk between the color channels which make it impossible to make a clean separation. It's really coming home to me that this is really the thing were mono imaging rally shines. The extra sensitivity is nice but it's the purity of the data that really counts.
I'm very close to falling off the fence!

I'm very close to falling off the fence! thats true. I started of with a color camera, but was very bad at editing, but my preference was always nebulas, but it kinda got on my nerves that no matter the script, or no matter the combination, I could never get an only ha and only oiii image, to properly process. that is what ultimately put the nail in the coffin for me, I find it so much easier to edit my images, now that I have full control over every bandpass and I can decide how much I want the Ha/oiii/Sii to show. yes mono requires longer time to get an image finished, but you get more control in my opinion, and the added purity as you said, bridges the gap for me.

Thank you Claudio! were you able to get a good image? I think for the data to show the supernova it needs more integration time, but honestly I think its still manageable with the little I have in there.

Since I made the original post a lot has changed in the market. With the introduction of affordable 585 sensor based, all in one solutions it was clear to me that it was time to get off the fence and do it. So, today I pressed the purchase button on a ToupTec ATR585M. I decided on this unit over the competing ZWO minicam8 because it was a bit cheaper and uses standard sized filters. The narrow band filters included are also a bit tighter in bandpass than the ZWO offering. I'm really excited about making the jump and I want to thank everyone who participated in this thread that helped me see the light. Of course, now the proof is in the pudding, no pressure eh?

OK, the pudding is pretty sweet! I've finally finished my first mono image: https://app.astrobin.com/i/xmm877It's only 2 hours and 40 min. at a 1:1:1:1 ratio so it's not super deep but what really blew me away is how vivid the colors were with absolutely no effort. Something I really struggled with in OSC. The frames were also very clean and deep in a way that's hard to describe, just a bit truer and less gritty. Processing certainly takes longer but I enjoy that end of it and I'm sure it will be a lot quicker once I get used to it. For me at least, the OSC verses Mono question is settled. Mono is the way to go.
