Complimenti per il contributo! Dettagli fantastici nel nucleo di questo e ottimo colore IMO. Ciò è stato fatto in Pixinsight o in qualche altro software? I used pixinsight and photoshop for some corrections once the stars were removed. The rc-astro suite and localistogramequalization . On Photoshop I used the camera raw filter.

Zak Jones: Here's my version of your data using PixInsight. Thank you very much for sharing your process, the result looks incredible! I do apologise that there is walking noise and it’s not in XISF format. I hope that wasn’t too much a nuisance to process. I’m really grateful for all of the results so far, it’s awesome to see everyone’s edits. I truely had no idea so much could be pulled from the data, it’s awesome to see. May I ask what pulled you to use Pixinsight? How long have you been using it for?

Pixinsight (LF, DBE, Color Calibration,Decon/Denoise, Masks, Curves Sat, Arcsinnstretch/Histostretch, De-star) PS Selective and combine
Love the colour in this one, thanks for contributing! As someone that doesn’t use Pixinsight (yet) do you mind elaborating on some of the acronyms? When you say denoise/decon, is that using BXT and NXT?

This is what I can manage and thank you for the data share. It's been cloudy here in Leeds for a long time and this was needed. Is it okay with you for me to put this on my personal gallery but obviously give you the credit for the data share? |

A fun dataset to play with. The background is a bit challenging but the galaxy responds well to deconvolution + MLT sharpening in PI |

Yes, I do use RC for Noice Reduction and Star Removal. LF = Linear Fit for channel equalization, DBE = Dynamic Background Extraction for balancing background. Arcsinn and Histrogramstretch are stretching tools. Curve Saturation option tool for masked luminance saturation and star saturation. Glad you liked it and hope that helps. PI is well worth the investment and learning curve |

Gave it a bit of a go in PixInsight. Hats off to you for trying to image with a Maksutov. You are one crazy fella. I would definitely consider dithering more to get rid of the walking noise, and I would also encourage you to check out your calibration because it did not seem like the flats (if you used any) did their job.

I have heard that Pixinsight has a bit of a learning curve
When I used it before (the trial), it wasn't too bad actually (it was very nice once I learned a simple processing workflow). I had to get used to remembering where to click the right buttons, almost never understood the actual meaning of certain terms (I think the Pixinsight creators put some exaggeratingly long/complicated-sounding script names/terms).
Experimental trial and error or the YT tutorials, to me, are the 2 best ways to learn Pixinsight.
Excellent to know! I’m sure it wouldn’t be too terrible, and I process data I capture over and over again so 45 days is hopefully enough to get a grasp of it. Given your work with Siril and Photoshop, do you remember how your results compare? I’m assuming you didn’t buy Pixinsight afterwards, is that because there was too much cost for benefit in your opinion?
My results were totally different between Pixinsight and the other software(s). Pixinsight easily beats them all, but final touch-ups can still be done in Photoshop. Pixinsight costs around $250. The essential RC tools (Blurxterminator, StarXT, NoiseXT) cost around another $250; so yes, before, it looked too pricy; but now I am planning to buy them because it has become stressful to go back-and-forth between different free softwares just to get a decent and sometimes ugly image. The main benefits I see in using PI are, 1. HDRMultiscaleTransform (which balances very bright areas of the image with the darker areas, usually essential for things like the Orion Nebula; as far as I know, you cannot find this tool in any free software.) 2. BlurXterminator is only compatible with PI (I assume you already know what that is) 3. The Pixinsight general button and function layout is better than Photoshop, and in my opinion, easier to deal with. (the Photoshop layers thing is stressful to me) 4. There are special scripts which obviously can only be used in Pixinsight. I'll share a script (I plan to use) that allows for exotic filter combinations and palettes (even a true color palette). You'll know how it is when you watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XxB-sOFD0Q. 5. You cannot find another stacking software as powerful as PI (especially when it comes to rejecting things from images like satellite trails). 6. Background extraction offers way more settings to be able to extract absolutely any gradient (at least mostly, if your gradients are really that bad). Automatic background extraction can even be used to extract gradients on the nebula itself (or so I heard from a pro PI guy. And there are numerous other things that make PI an all-in-one AP software. I guess it's possible to get Siril and Photoshop with NXT and SXT and get away with good images, but there are a lot of limitations that way and it takes more time, plus, you don't get good deconvolution.

Grégory Fabre: Hi,

Clear skies! Awesome to see what can be done with free software, thanks so much for contributing! I love the detail. I have never heard of Astrosurface before, after a quick lookup it seems to be useful for planetary image processing. What tools does it have that helped you process this image?

I have been considering starting my own gallery on Astrobin for a while but haven't considered if what I was capturing was really worth it here. If anything I have been made a massive fool of, the community here is wonderful!

Another fantastic and convincing use of Pixinsight. I do apologies for the walking noise in the background, Given the focal length of the scope and w/o guiding I am still experimenting with dithering to this day. Hoping to invest in guiding soon!

PI is well worth the investment and learning curve Thanks so much for helping out with the Acronyms, every little bit helps if I end up getting Pixinsight or the trial version. Interesting to see that Pixinsight supports saturation controls for different parts of the image. Of course Photoshop and Gimp have selection tools to help with this but I suppose Pixinsight does not? Sounds very automated which is cool!

Had to do a little compressing to make it under the 1 megabyte mark. Quite happy with how this came out, wish I had Pixinsight so I could blurX it! Might redo this & make the blues more lite as they feel rather dark right now

Thank you so much for contributing! This one has a great balance between sharpening, noise reduction and colour, I really like it! Yes, imaging on a Maksutov has been a struggle, but least to say eye-opening and enjoyable. I know it's a slow scope, I know I'm setting myself up for failure most of the time with tracking, but If anything what people are showing me through this thread is it is very possible to produce good images with the right target. I am very thankful for everyone's contributions so far! Yep, definitely still experimenting with dithering with an unguided setup to this day, even 5 months later. It's tricky since I've swapped cameras (from the Nikon D3400 to the Canon EOS 7D), but some of my more recent data is promising. I did use flats, but you are right, for some reason there is something going on with this one. Again, with some more recent data, I did my flats but they didn't work out at all! I'm thinking it might be incorrect exposure, but as always, I'll have to keep experimenting. If you have the time, I would love to hear about your rough workflow, especially since I've never used Pixinsight before. Thanks again for sharing an epic processed image!

This is basically where I am at as well. There is so much free software required to even get close to what Pixinsight can do all in house. It is probably still pretty far for me considering my low astro budget at the moment, and Deep Sky Detail's Astro-sharp tool is not helping (convincing me to get Pixinsight, BXT and NXT that is, because it's quite good and still in development). 1. HDRMultiscaleTransform (which balances very bright areas of the image with the darker areas, usually essential for things like the Orion Nebula; as far as I know, you cannot find this tool in any free software.) This to me sounds super useful, especially for galaxies with bright cores and bulges (like M83). I try my best to deal with it with Highlights in Gimp, but as with everything compared to Pixinsight, it isn't dedicated for astro and is ultimately a workaround. plus, you don't get good deconvolution. Completely agree. The combination of SXT, BXT and NXT all in one software is very intriguing. I will very likely get the free trial of Pixinsight and the XTerminator suite once I return to my editing setup, and I may even share my results of the same image back here for feedback and comparison if people are interested! I will also likely compare BXT and NXT with Astro-sharp, since it is a massive contestant in choosing Pixinsight over free software.

If you want better sharpening for your image for free, I would highly recommend Astro-sharp from Deep Sky Detail. The guy is super talented, and although I can't compare his tool's results with BXT and NXT, I think it gets much better results than not using it at all. I think it would work a treat somewhere in your workflow! If you have the time, do you mind sharing what software you used to make this iteration?
