Just a friendly request, as the original topic starter - I was asking about books or other materials to help someone with no Photoshop experience get up to speed on both Photoshop and Photoshop as it applies to astroimaging.  The lease versus buy debate is an interesting one, and increasingly apposite in many walks of life, but not what I was looking to elicit with this thread…And I certainly didn;t want to start a topic that causes tempers to run high.

This thread is starting to sound like the old PixInsight verses anything else debate and, equally useless. People love what they use and are comfortable with. if it was expensive they will love it more. I think what matters is how well you understand and apply the tools you have. No matter what your choices may be. It comes down to understanding process and taste.

OK, then why opine about the topic at all?
The OP asked about using Photoshop.  People gave opinions on why it is useful and a good product.
The OP did not ask for the cheapest best software, it asked about Photoshop which is the most popular software used by professional photographers.
The thread is only "useless" to you, I think the OP got some very good information.

I think the OP got useful information from all involved.

No one is upset, it's just a lively discussion as is normal here. I hope you found some value in it.

The problem is, if you buy/rent PS today it will cost you $263.88 US a year, to rent. I used to have a copy of PS5 for years and it was fine but I can do the same things with just about any layer based photo editor, paid or free.

Not sure where you are getting this $263.88 a year. I've been, like just about everyone else hear has said, and I just renewed my 5th year at $120 per year.
And to the OP, Adam Block has great videos on PS.

Hi,

I only use photoshop and so took the time to write a 40 page astro image processing guide.
It's available for purchase here if interested.

https://andysastro.com/photoshop-secrets-for-astrophotographers/

I'm not likely to retire from the proceeds, but many people have told me that it's helpful.

I would also check out any Bray Falls processing videos, he does about 50/50, Pixinsight/Photoshop.
His Photoshop knowledge and skill is about as good any Photographer anywhere.

Okay, no problem.  Happy to have the conversation run where it will.  Probably still just traumatised from the flame wars that flared up from time to time on another site.

And thanks to everyone for the suggestions!

If you have already purchased Photoshop then disregard. If not, take a look at Affinity Photo. It's as powerful as Photoshop is but you only have to pay for it once and it's yours. You are right in thinking that you need a photo editor to put the final touches on an image. Photoshop, Affinity or even GIMP (free!) will get the job done.

Affinity will also read FITS files.
