This is my first topic on the forum I'm kindly asking about constructive critique of my Iris nebula. Frames acquired from Poland, Bortle 5, maybe Bortle 4 around this sky area (lower LP). 
Nearly 14 hours, L: 7 hours and RGB: 6 hours. 

Camera: ASI 294mm

Workflow separately for L and then RGB 
1) PixSingit
- Color Combination for RGB
- BlurXTerminator for RGB and L
- DBE (separately for L and RGB)
- SPCC for RGB
- GHS for L and then RGB


2) Photoshop
- Camera Raw Filter, Noise reduction (color) and then NoiseXTerminator (just a little) for L and RGB
- StarXterminator for L and RGB stars
- Separately adjust colors for stars and nebula with Match Color, Selective Color, Hue & Saturation; little adjustment with Curves. 
- "Darkening" the stars layer (Linear dodge) with adjustment layer (Curves) for L and RGB
- High Pass filter (then Soft Light) + blur mask for the center if the Iris.
- Merge layers 
- NoiseXTerminator 
- Color Blotch Reduction Action
- Enhance DSO and Reduce Stars (opacity about 30%)
- Some final adjustments for colors (Match Color, Selective color)

I'm not sure about colors of the stars and colors of the dust around Iris... what are your fist feelings about the photo?

I will be grateful for any comments and suggestions for improving the processing and image.

Love it! I really Like the dust structures and the beautiful color of the nebula in it… Thanks also for sharing some insights in the process. I really can't give any advice to get it better.

Hi Krzysztof.  I had a look at your masters and you have overexposed the central core star in all 4, L,R,G and B a bit. This is a very common mistake on the Iris as well as many other objects.  Yours is not too bad but you are losing detail near the star.  It is crucial that one gets the very brightest brights under control immediately in the process and it starts in the acquisition phase.
If your subs are blowing out the core then it is just going to get worse as you move along in processing.

If your subs are NOT overexposed then I suggest you go back and reprocess the masters paying careful attention to the central star area and for now don't worry  too much about the dust and background, just get the Iris so the star is not blowing out the detail.

5 min process:

After channel combination in PI:
Mild stretch
Bxt,Nxt, Sxt
Mild color boost on starless desaturating reds
2nd stretch on starless
recombine starless and stars in Pixel Math
Adding 10% lum to final image with Pixel Math

I masked off the core with every stretch to keep the over exposure to a minimum

Hello Krzysztof,

1st very nice photo and great job on the processing! My 1st thoughts when I looked at it was great looking image and still is but, if there was a couple of things that I’d want to adjust I’d say just tone down the Red a bit and in PI I’d use a mask to pull back the brightness in the core using HDR. Both of which @wsg had mentioned. Also I want to mention great job on keeping the stars sharp in all 4 corners of the image so you clearly have no tilt issues with your imaging train!

I shot this image a little over a year ago https://www.astrobin.com/j1z8vv/E/?nc=&nce=#r0 and really need to reprocess it with the new tools in PI and techniques (workflow) I use now.

Over all great image and really color is to personal taste. I have 2 variations to my image. I like the color more so in the 1st variation and the core better in the 2nd so like I said I really need to go back and reprocess the data.

My only real critique is on the colors.    The core is over saturated, and maybe not accurate color.  It feels unnatural.    The stars could use a little more color as well.   Simple as cranking the C curve in Pix.   I played for a couple minutes.   Overall I think you did pretty well with the luminance, maybe a few tweaks/hdr with the core, or relax the stretch.       in the end though, it's only the colors that bother me.   Nice work

Very nice image. Others have hit the points I would. You PI workflow is a bit out of order from the "best practice". Take this advice for what it is, just a best practice not "the only correct way" or anything. DBE and SPCC should come before BlurXterminator.

Your workflow was;

- Color Combination for RGB
- BlurXTerminator for RGB and L
- DBE (separately for L and RGB)
- SPCC for RGB
- GHS for L and then RGB

It should be;

- Color Combination for RGB
- DBE (separately for L and RGB)
- SPCC for RGB
- BlurXTerminator for RGB and L
- GHS for L and then RGB
