Hello everyone,

I need some help/tips/critiques to understand an issue that i see with the following image of M51:
https://app.astrobin.com/i/aiuc5p

The data is from a Seestar S50, 310 x 10 s subs from Bortle 4-5 skies. My Pixinsight processing workflow is as follows:
WBPP, dynamic background extraction, SPCC, SCNR, BXT, NXT, Stretch with Histogram Transformation (dragging the ScreenTransferFunction data into Histogram Transformation and applying to the image), StarXT, LRGBCombination with the luminance channel, Curves Transformation for Red and Blue, CorrectMagentaStars scriptRange Selection (invert mask), Curves Transformation for the background luminance, DarkStructureEnhance script, Range Selection, LocalHistogramEqualization for galaxy features (around 0.3 amount), PixelMath to add stars and starless images. Final polishing with Adobe Lightroom.

What i see as an outcome is this "artificial" looking pixelated fuzziness, especially towards the outer layers of the two galaxies which does not seem to seamlessly merge into the background. My guess is this might be something with the Range Selection settings (usually Fuzziness of 0.2 and Smoothness of 20). However, i have tried different values here which seem to improve things but this issue still persists as seen in the image above. Could someone please point to what i could do better to avoid this issue, which i also observe in the M81/M82 image in my gallery. Is it that i dont have enough integration and the issue could go away with more data? Could it be with the lightroom touch-up i do (cannot remember the setting details)? I do make the background too dark which might highlight the issue in a more pronounced manner.

Any tips/advice will be very helpful. If any additional information is needed from my end, please let me know.

Thanks in advance and Regards,
Vineet

Following is my stacked file if someone wants to have a crack at it.

I would really appreciate to see what the data can lead to. Would then be my target whilst i play around further in Pixinsight.

You might want to simplify your workflow until you have more control over the tools you have. Just stack, sharpen, stretch, denoise a see what you get.

Amazing what this setup can do. Advice? Keep on shooting, this site has people who spent 100x what you did. Keep your expectations as a journey of learning. If you enjoy the hobby and join a club. Clubs can have a wealth of knowledge and even sometimes equipment that they share. I am off to a cub scout public outreach. I am a novice at processing, so I am probably not the best to ask for help.

Thanks for the suggestion Tony. I am quite new to Pixinsight and settled on a workflow based on a youtube tutorial. I guess going back to square one, as you say, might be a way out here. Could you please give me some hints as to a decent starting point for sharpening in Pixinsight, in terms of process/script to use?

I don't use PI so I can't help you there but I'm sure someone else can chime in with that info.

This is a center crop of what I produced with your data with a quick 5-minute process:

image.png

I’m very impressed by what the S50 can do. Yes, the resolution could be better for a small target like M51, and there is chromatic aberration, but it can go quite deep and the noise is very manageable.

My workflow in PI is similar to the one you outlined:

image.png

The initial ABE is with polynomial degree 0, just to remove the background “fog”. Then the second is with poly degree 4. The first BXT is in “correct only” mode, the second one after SPCC is for the actual sharpening.
For stretching, I used GeneralizedHyperbolicStretch. I didn’t do any LRGB combination because the data was RGB only, and using a luminance extracted from RGB only to recombine with RGB doesn’t produce any benefit.

GraXpert, SPCC, BXT (correct only), BXT, Stretch with Bill's PixelMath, SXT.
For starless: SCNR, CorrectMagentaStars script,  Histogram Transformation, Curves Transformation for colors, NXT.
For stars: Curves Transformation
Star integration, Crop

@Francesco Meschia and @Hornisse : Thanks a lot for your tips and processing of my data. I will certainly tweak my workflow accordingly and give it a shot asap. Will get back to you.

Here are re-processed crops of the same data as the original but using my workflow adapted based on your tips:

As mentioned by Francesco, the LRGB was one of my issues making all my images way "redder" than they should be. I really have to thank @Francesco Meschia and @Hornisse  for your tips. Just wondering, at what point do you guys use the "RangeSelection" processes in PI?

I rarely use it. Most of my masking is done with stretched luminance masks, I rarely have situations where I need the sharp cut-off of a range mask.
